Learning Center
I’m going to give back a portion of the proceeds from
Dyslexia Wonders to
The West Michigan Learning Center for Children.
Educating Teachers and Tutoring Students With Dyslexia
The Center is attended is located in downtown Grand Rapids, an hour from my home.
There are 59 Learning Centers in operation in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin.
The centers were originally founded by the Scottish Rite Masons, Northern Jurisdiction, in 1994. The Masons have been a major sponsor of our center since inception.
Over 7,000 children and nearly 1,500 teachers have participated in the program, but those numbers barely begin to reveal the impact of this effort. For every teacher who was trained, there are as many children with improved reading, spelling, and writing skills as each person had the ability and time to teach. And for every child whose struggle to learn was eased, there are as many families that now find life a bit brighter and the future holding many more prospects for positive contributions to society.
The program objectives of the Learning Centers for Children, are to:
1) Provide, free of charge, one-to-one multisensory reading and written language tutorial services to children with dyslexia;
2) Provide, free of charge, training programs to individuals interested in becoming certified tutors in the Orton-Gillingham approach; and
3) Support research programs in dyslexia for improving clinical standards and care.
Participants remain in the program for an average of two to three years at an estimated cost of $5,000 per child per year.
