Improve your Reading Brain and Memory by Surfing the Internet

Recent research at University of California Los Angeles Center on Aging has found that surfing the Internet may improve memory, including the parts of the brain that control reading, language and memory, which will help the memories of those over the age of 40.

It is wonderful to know our brain is still flexible and adapts even as we age. I used to think that being over 40 meant that your brain was at its prime and its all down hill from here. I am happy to report I am wrong. It is now known that when someone has a stroke and damages a portion of their brain, the brain is able to compensate for the damage by using the same brain area except on the other side of the brain. Maybe this explains why dyslexics have a tendency to be more right brained. Maybe the left side has been damaged and the right side is compensating for this and thus is working harder. Dyslexics then develop and utilize the right side of the brain more than non-dyslexics and as a result are more creative than others.

This study might help dyslexia research come to the same conclusion for high school students. That would be a very good reason why schools should offer access to the Internet to complete home work. Most public schools do not offer wireless Internet access. Imagine if all schools allowed students to bring in their lap tops and work on homework during school hours. This would be a wonderful trend. If only we could have access to a filter that really worked to help protect our student population,

The good news for now is that is appears based on this research the surfing on the Internet demands a deeper level of engagement than reading, which may delay the atrophy and diminished cell activity that can erode cognitive ability,

The research will appear in a forthcoming issue of the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.
