Dyslexia causes and risk factors

Definition

Developmental reading disorder, also called dyslexia, is a reading disability resulting from the inability to process graphic symbols.

It is believed that about 8% of all kids are affected from some degree of reading disability. This is not caused by vision problems but by the brain’s ability to recognize and process symbols. Children with a reading disability may have trouble rhyming, separating sounds into spoken words and even skipping. These abilities appear to be critical in the process of learning to read. It is the same that you need to crawl before you can walk.

These kids are not stupid they just learn differently than the majority of other kids. Many kids with learning disabilities are average and above average intelligence. The learning disorder is a specific information processing problem that is not connected with the ability to think or comprehend complex ideas. They are not stupid and should not be made to feel stupid.

Most children begin their reading journey based on word recognition, which involves being able to separate out the sounds in words and associate them with letters and groups of letters. That is what phonics is about. These children have difficulty connecting the sounds to the letters of the word.

If your child is having difficulty, even at a very young age try teaching in a multi-sensory way and you may notice that learning is not as painful. Ask your general Doctor to evaluate your child and express your concerns. No child should be given up on.
