While at The International Dyslexia Conference, at Walt Disney World, Jenny stopped in at the ESPN bar and wowed them.
Dyslexia Wonders, written by 12-year-old Jennifer Smith, is hot off the press and ready to read!
In her book, published by New York Publisher Morgan James, Jennifer explains what daily life was like before she or her parents understood anything about dyslexia. As those with a learning disability know, others can be cruel and taunting, and Jennifer was no exception.
She was plagued every day by mean children and even mean adults who did not know or begin to understand her problems. Eventually, Jennifer came to view herself as stupid, unworthy and ashamed.
For example, in order to give a book review in front of her English class, Jennifer would have her mother, Anita, read the book to her over and over…not to comprehend the material, but rather to memorize it! Only then did she feel she could be adequate in her ‘review.’ During the times when she was called on impromptu by the teacher to give a review, or even to read in front of the class, Jennifer wished the floor would open up and swallow her whole. August 2009 I was published in the magazine called The Northern light. This magazine is distributed throughout the Masonic Fraternity. The Mason’s have generously given to many organizations including the Children’s Learning Center which helped me learn to read.
The Masonic organization is dedicated to helping others and for this I will always be grateful.
Developmental reading disorder, also called dyslexia, is a reading disability resulting from the inability to process graphic symbols.
It is believed that about 8% of all kids are affected from some degree of reading disability. This is not caused by vision problems but by the brain’s ability to recognize and process symbols. Children with a reading disability may have trouble rhyming, separating sounds into spoken words and even skipping. These abilities appear to be critical in the process of learning to read. In Grand Rapids my mother and I traveled to see Dr. Ryan. A expert in diagnosing dyslexia and other learning disabilities. The reason i was going, was to get a updated diagnoses of my dyslexia. The reason for this was to have a recent diagnoses to prove that for the ACT or SAT I need to receive extra time and accomidations, which help have better success on those tests for Dyslexics and people with learning disabilities.

Recent research at University of California Los Angeles Center on Aging has found that surfing the Internet may improve memory, including the parts of the brain that control reading, language and memory, which will help the memories of those over the age of 40.
